Ward 8 has an unemployment rate of 28.5% — the highest in the US.

Our Pre-Employment Program (PEP), based in Southeast DC, equips people to join, or rejoin, the workforce. Participants attend bi-weekly courses that include guest speakers, college tours, and mock interviews to prepare them with the confidence and skills needed for job-seeking.

82% of PEP graduates have transitioned into stable jobs, internships, or educational programs.

Kiara Bell

Kiara is a 20-year-old single mother from Anacostia – DC’s poorest community. When she came to Bread for the City, she was out of work, homeless and hungry.

She came to Bread for the City for job training and gained so much more. Most importantly though, she says, “When I came to PEP, I was unemployed. Now I’m working.”

Within weeks, Kiara secured an internship with the DC government and enrolled in her first semester of college. Now, she’s living in stable, affordable housing with her daughter while she studies forensic science!

With your help, we can ensure that DC residents have access
to the training and resources they need to find work and lead stable lives.
