4,600 people in DC face abuse in the place where they should feel most safe: their homes.

Apart from the physical and emotional scars it leaves, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness in the US. Here at Bread, we refer survivors to shelters where they can find safety. We also provide them with clothing and nutritious groceries to help them start over.

98% of people in DC seeking civil protection orders lack legal counsel. Our pro bono attorneys help survivors get civil protection orders and resolve disputes over child custody and divorce.

Tara-and-son-croppedOutside of a metro station in Southeast DC, Tara’s partner punched her again and again and again. He finally stopped when a passerby intervened. But, by then, the damage was done. He had punched her hard enough to leave bruises on her arms and legs. He had even pushed over her 4-year-old son, leaving him with a bruised face.

Tara decided that she’d had enough.

Now, she’s working with Bread for the City’s legal clinic in order to serve her attacker with notice of her Civil Protection Order case and obtain court-ordered protection.

We’ve helped over 100 domestic violence survivors this year.
