Announcing: Bread for the City’s new Dental Clinic!
Dental care: it’s an essential to our health, and yet there is a dearth of options available to low-income DC residents. Indeed, we estimate that as many as half of all Bread for the City clients don’t currently have access to a dentist!
This has been a long-held goal of ours, and thanks to the tremendous support of our community of donors, we are opening this new dental clinic years ahead of schedule.
We expect this clinic to accommodate nearly 700 patients in nearly 2,000 visits each year.
Read a blog post about our very first dental patient visit here! And read WAMU’s reporting on our new clinic here.
The clinic is dedicated to the memory of William J. Christie, D.D.S., and his wife, Mary C. Christie, whose support has made this opening possible.
GRAND OPENING: Feb 16th 2012
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Dental Clinic ‘floss-snipping’ ceremony! See this slideshow above, or check out our Flickr set here.
Welcome, ‘Dr. Smyles’!

I originally hail from the Windy City of Chicago and am very happy to be here at Bread for the City and to be of service to others. When not at work, I'm home with my wife and four, yes four, kids. I received my training in general dentistry from Howard University and have now been in the DC area for over 10 years. I'm excited to start helping, one mouth at a time!
This is made possible by your support
Our Northwest Center expansion has been primarily funded by a generous grant from the District of Columbia Primary Care Association through its Medical Homes DC Capital Projects initiative, which is funded by the DC government.
Our dental clinic was originally planned to open three years after the Northwest Center expansion — in 2014. Thanks to a generous community of supporters, we’re able to open it way ahead of schedule! We’ve raised 95% of the cost of the dental clinic’s first year. Will you help us keep this momentum?
