Bread for the City is a private, non-profit organization that provides vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with comprehensive services including food, clothing, medical care, legal and social services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
Responsibilities:
- Assess and assist patients in the completion and filing of public benefits forms.
- Maintain the clinic’s referral system. This includes a relationship with referral health care organizations, scheduling patient visits, providing patients with the appropriate paperwork and information and obtaining results.
- Provide information and referrals to appropriate programs to help patients achieve goals.
- Advocate on behalf of patients in connection with local and federal government benefit programs, and other agencies providing services.
- Develop and maintain expertise in public and private resources applicable to the low-income population that Bread for the City serves.
- Work with the medical director in problem solving as issues arise, assist in new areas of program expansion as needed.
Requirements: - Bachelor’s Degree; additional experience preferred
- Commitment to working with the low-income residents of DC
- Interest in community based healthcare
- Excellent assessment skills
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with a wide variety of people
- Strong time management skills, and the ability to juggle multiple projects and set priorities to meet deadlines
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to working for and with low income people
- Spanish language proficiency a plus
